On Sunday, March 2, 2025, Wesley United Methodist Church was honored to recognize Champaign County Health Care Consumers (CCHCC) as this year’s recipient of the Jean Cramer-Heuerman Peace with Justice Award during our annual Peace with Justice service.

Celebrating a Legacy of Health Justice

CCHCC has been a pillar of grassroots organizing for health care justice in Champaign County since 1977. Their mission is rooted in the belief that health care is a basic human right, and they work tirelessly to ensure access to quality, affordable health care for all.

Through direct service, consumer education, advocacy, and community organizing, CCHCC empowers individuals and communities to have a voice in the health care system and drive meaningful social change.

During the service, Claudia Lennhoff, Executive Director of CCHCC, shared inspiring stories of the organization’s impact. She highlighted the ways CCHCC assists individuals and families with essential services, including:

  • Navigating Medicare, Medicaid, and Marketplace insurance enrollment

  • Accessing disability services, prescription assistance, and dental care

  • Connecting clients to financial assistance programs

  • Providing education and advocacy for environmental health and justice

A Conversation on Health Equity

Following the service, we gathered for a reception and Q&A session with CCHCC representatives. This time allowed members of our congregation and community to learn more about their work, ask questions, and discuss ways to support health justice locally.

CCHCC’s commitment to service extends beyond health care enrollment—they provide Community Health Workers who offer advocacy, referrals, and case management for individuals navigating complex systems of care. Their website, www.healthcareconsumers.org, offers valuable resources, program details, and inspiring client stories that showcase the depth of their impact.
