The University of Illinois is home to a large population of international students and visiting scholars, and we here at Wesley want to help them feel at home. To that end, we offer a range of programs that help international visitors explore and make connections. Wesley is a welcoming space to learn and grow, and a perfect place to share great experiences with others.
In the past year, people from all over the world (including China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Brazil, Spain, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Turkey, Jordan, Argentina, and more) have participated in Wesley programming.
Wesley offers a casual English class for beginning through advanced students. There’s no fee or registration. Each week we explore unique aspects of American culture, including food and holidays. We also talk about grammar and learn difficult words and phrases. Wesley’s ESL class is a fun place to learn and a great place to meet new friends.
The ESL class meets every Friday from 3pm-4pm, and it is followed by the International Coffeehouse.
International Coffeehouse is a gathering of domestic and international students, visiting scholars, friends, and family members. Sharing drinks, snacks, and conversation, participants learn about one another and practice their conversational English. It is a great place to make new friends and learn about the world. Where else can you go and have the world sitting around your table?
International Coffeehouse is held every Friday from 4pm-6pm in Etc. Coffeehouse.
First Friday Classic Movie Nights
On the first Friday of each month, join us at 9pm in the Wesley theater for a classic American movie. Each month’s movie comes from a different genre—we’ve done classic musicals, classic romantic movies, and more—and is a great way to have fun while learning about American popular culture.
First Friday Classic Movie Nights are held on the first Friday of the month during the semester at 9pm in the Wesley theater (upstairs from Etc. Coffeehouse).
Wesley has offered field trips for international students and visiting scholars, as well as Summer movie series and more. Visit our Chinese Ministry page for more information about Chinese programs at Wesley. Stay tuned for new international programs at Wesley!
